Look out for the fashion world's up-and-comers
Boston Fashion Week and the Fashion Group International of Boston initially partnered three years ago on a project called The Launch. In the spring they reached out to schools in the area with fashion programs and asked the heads of those departments to recommend three recent graduates that were worthy of being singled out as a new face to watch. Those designers were then invited to an interview and portfolio review. The goal of the initiative has been to find five promising talents that can take to the catwalk during Boston Fashion Week, with the intent of helping them launch their careers.
After the screening process, these five designers develop capsule collections that are featured in a group show during Boston Fashion Week. They receive the support of many fashion industry professionals in order to present their work in the best possible light. Salons, makeup artists, stylists and models volunteer their time to ensure a polished look on the runway. The team behind Boston Fashion Week, FGI Boston members, and a wide variety of other industry insiders contribute to making the most of this opportunity for the designers. This year's fortunate five are Karina Bresnahan, GeorgAnnette Chatterly, Mishal Kizilbash, Christine Lam, and Candice Wu. In addition to displaying exceptional talent and professionalism, these designers also represent the creative and cultural diversity of the Boston fashion scene.
The designers selected for The Launch 2011 will also benefit from the latest addition to the week, The Tent at Boston Fashion Week, a new venue that will serve as the centerpiece of Boston's weeklong celebration of style. The Tent is a joint endeavor between Boston Fashion Week, Boston magazine, Mandarin Oriental, Boston, PBD Events and The Shops at Prudential Center. It represents the first major collaboration of this scale in Boston, and it has been designed to provide a bigger platform for fashion in the city. Attendees will enjoy exciting fashion experiences with high caliber production values, and so will The Launch designers.
The bar continues to be raised with new venues, innovative design, and a community committed to nurturing the next generation of fashion professionals. Beyond the runway, the public will have the opportunity to see a special selection from the collections of The Launch designers during Boston Fashion Week. A special exhibit will be installed on Monday, September 26, 2011 in the Center Court of Copley Place.
