Mayor's Office Honors Multicultural Marketing Leader
Colette Phillips, President and CEO of Colette Phillips Communications, Inc., received the We Are Boston Community Leadership Award from Mayor Thomas M. Menino and the Mayor's Office of New Bostonians for her commitment to promoting and embracing Boston's multicultural mission.
Phillips, well-known in New England as a leader in multicultural marketing, was honored for her empowering "New Bostonians" to participate fully in the economic, social, civic and cultural understanding and collaboration in the city. The fourth annual "We Are Boston" Awards gala was held October 6 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center.
"Immigrants from all over the world move to Boston and help to make it a world-class city," Mayor Menino said."This is a great event that highlights the diversity of our city."
Phillips is known for building bridges between different communities, faiths and cultures. As a first-generation immigrant, Phillips founded Colette Phillips Communications, Inc. in 1986 becoming the first person of color in Boston to create a public relations and marketing communications firm. In 2000, she created Kaleidoscope, Boston's first multicultural resource directory, which is still in circulation today. Boston Magazine called Kaleidoscope, "the ultimate networking tool for people often left out of the network."
The We Are Boston event celebrates Boston's diversity, immigrant heritage, and the outstanding contributions of individuals and organizations to Boston's immigrant community. Proceeds from the event went to support the "English for New Bostonians" initiative, a city-private-community partnership enabling more than 1,000 new Bostonians access to English classes, and other crucial programs.
